Migrating #Dillo from GitHub to our self-hosted server.
I wrote a post about the current situation with #GitHub and how we ended up self-hosting our own infrastructure to be robust against data loss. We now store all important data (including issues) in git repositories which are replicated accross #Codeberg and #Sourcehut.
A thing that has been in my head for years: An intern assigned to a project to improve caching in a hot path system declared one day that the problem was that we had been thinking about it all wrong: we didn't want a better cache eviction policy, we wanted a better cache admission policy. He then set about implementing a really simple thing that he only added stuff to the cache after it had been used more than N times in a sliding window. Cache instantly performed like 50% better. There's a lesson here.
I think my favourite point so far in the progression of AI was when Microsoft launched the new Bing Chat (Sydney) which was really quite horrifically misaligned, manipulative, and frankly just completely evil.
Quick little micro post about it: https://vale.rocks/micros/20250417-1200
I frequently hear people say they don’t need to support older browsers because ‘everything auto-updates now’.
Here are some reasons that people might not have an up-to-date browser:
"proprietary software is gross" mfs on their way to install steam and 500gb of games (not one of them is oss
@julia Does it count if the games aren't open source but you have the source anyway
@ipg@wetdry.world I think you might be the only person that applies to but y'know what sure
@julia@eepy.moe @ipg@wetdry.world anyone playing minecraft also
@alice@mk.nyaa.place @ipg@wetdry.world not really that's different You could make that argument for most java or C# games
@4censord@unfug.social @julia@eepy.moe @ipg@wetdry.world just stopped obfuscating it, so mappings aren't needed anymore. They've had official mappings for a while now I have no clue why they don't just publish it at this point, but nope, they didn't
"OpenTorment and LibreNexus" still makes me laugh
i could write manifestos on how free software went nowhere near far enough or i could just post the above on repeat
@lanodan @hipsterelectron for all the bad of free software, i think open source misses it even harder
the point is users, actual users, regular people. corporations should fuck off or fund development
During the UK Covid vaccine rollout, I would print blank NHS vaccination cards so I could get as many vaccinations as possible. I received 4789 different vaccinations, from all three major drug companies. I had to travel to different clinics, then different cities, and even to the other nations of the UK just to get more, because I would be getting recognised by NHS staff.
@sturmsucht I tend to agree but also faced with the fact the alternative suck ...
@tnt agree to disagree here. If you don't like Matrix, there is stoat.chat or honestly any forum software out there to self-host. NodeBB, flarum, etc.
I think support really doesn't need to be on messengers for communication. It honestly shouldn't use them, because you can't index and search those answers through search engines.
@tnt@chaos.social @sturmsucht@mastodon.social if either Revolt/Stoat or Matrix were trustworthy and good I would wholeheartedly endorse this but as is I understand why people are drawn to Discord (even if I don't think it's ideal)
@tnt@chaos.social @sturmsucht@mastodon.social to be clear, my issue w/Matrix is more about the actual functionality (the clients don't really seem to be there yet, moderation is... lmfao), and as someone who was in the (then) Revolt team I would not personally trust them to not just become Yet Another Startup. what's the point in upending everything and moving to a platform that either doesn't have various features (including "not being spammed with CSAM") or run by people who also I never
@tnt@chaos.social @sturmsucht@mastodon.social fair - certainly documentation/known issues should be on a forum or similar. Discourse is pretty good :3
I find it disillusioning to see the casual use of "AI" slowly creeping into our hacker circles. Most of the discussions about AI focus on the quality of its output. I think we're not doing a good job communicating its more fundamental dangers.
In this blog post I write about how tools shape who we are and why the resource intensiveness of AI is ingrained in its purpose. About the devaluation of skills, and power cycles.
Let me know what you think.
https://fokus.cool/2025/11/25/i-dont-care-how-well-your-ai-works.html
@fionafokus even without all the other issues than technical, i wouldn't use them, simply because i believe a developer's tools should be reimplementable, by a single person, which LLMs very much aren't
Sorry but if you turn off JS for websites in 2025 you're at least a little bit insane or just a masochist.
"Hm lemme make my like 999% harder by being unable to interact with any web services made without progressive enhancement (almost all of them)"
If you want to live a life in the 21st century you're gonna have so many NoScript exceptions that you may as well not have it on. It's a Sisyphean task.
You can secure your life 100% more effectively by self hosting the majority of the things you use instead of building your impenetrable fortress where nothing works without six hours of tweaking.
NoScript in 2025 is on par with only running a 15 year old Thinkpad because you think Intel is trying to probe your ass and post it online with microcode updates
“we should make a slur for __“ ………. No we shouldn’t
@GrapheneOS is being threatened by French authorities for refusing to add backdoors and they're dealing with coordinated attacks in French media right now. They're pulling out of France entirely, moving all their servers, and fighting off a wave of bullshit one-sided reporting that makes them look like they're helping criminals.
They need us to fight back. Support them however you can, whether that's a dollar, sharing their story, pushing back on the garbage news coverage when you see it, or just telling someone you know about what's happening. All of it matters because they're drowning in attacks from governments and media and bad actors who want them gone.
This is the only Android OS that actually makes me feel like privacy isn't just marketing. They fight for us now they need us to fight for them.
The EU is pushing Chat Control and creating an environment where governments feel empowered to threaten developers into compliance, and if we stay quiet we're letting it happen. Show up for them in whatever way you're able to.
#grapheneos #Privacy #NoBackdoors #encryption #security #chatControl
Some helpful advice for all you software devs:
- You cannot solve social problems with code
- You cannot improve a system until you understand why it works the way it does
- You cannot produce tools for someone else without understanding how they work and what they are trying to accomplish
C shills in 2025 🥀
hello fellow artists. google has fallen. pinterest/duckduckgo AI filters don't work. do not despair; here is a list i made of places to find reference images without having to sift through piles of worthless garbage: http://doodlemancy.dreamwidth.org/20757.html
yknow what i hate? the overprevalence of screen monopolising app design on desktop operating systems. why does everything need to be designed like it message apps. web browsers. game launchers. music players. i'm fucking looking at YOU discord Signal i can run in a tiny ass window without losing any functionality or readability, but oh, YOU'RE special?? fuck off lmao i want to use my computers like i'm on Windows XP again, and your arbitrary design rules won't stop me, i'm just gonna bitch whenever they fail my use case, what're you gonna do about it??
@buncube i love discord turning chat into 4 character long lines bc i MUST be able to see the member list and guilds list at all time
JPEG XL in Chromium update:
“[...] we would welcome contributions to integrate a performant and memory-safe JPEG XL decoder in Chromium. In order to enable it by default in Chromium we would need a commitment to long-term maintenance.”

imagine being on segfault.us.to
Today, my VPS served over 51.5 million requests. Well over 99% of that was AI crawlers and other obnoxious shits.
This is not normal. This is complete and utter bullshit. This is also happening all over the place.
It can be caught, it's not even hard. But we shouldn't need to. This is about three orders of magnitude more requests I'd normally receive, and it's almost entirely useless garbage.
Every single one of you who use GenAI tools, you personally, are complicit in this. You are responsible for these bots hammering the entire internet, you are enabling it.
If you think this price is acceptable, that every single person who hosts anything outside of BigTech walled gardens deserves this relentless assault of thieving robots, then you are a garbage human being.
But it is not too late to change course. You too can look back at the carnage you enabled, and feel remorse. It's okay. We'll forgive you.
You don't need to look at the environment damage LLMs cause - we can have an educated guess (it's very bad). You don't need to look at the unsustainability of it all. All of those are things that we don't directly feel right now.
But look at the damage these things cause to everyone outside of the BigTech walled gardens. That is measurable. These attacks are fact. You can't debate it. You can't justify it.
You, dear enabler of GenAI bullshit, you are responsible for enabling this carnage. Think about that. Feel bad about it, and stop. Today is a great day to do that.
DNI anyone who thinks masculinity is inherently evil, and that trans men are "requesting labor from transfeminine people" other than wanting to be recognized and understood
calling stuff you don't connect to "psyops" is such a clear marker of a disconnection you have with your fellow brothers and sisters, do better
okay fuck it i'm dropping the mask
i know so many of my transmasc friends who have gotten harassed and mistreated by people of specific queer circles in fedi that claim that masculinity is an inherently evil thing, people who have provided proof in the past of being mistreated, people who are asking to please just be acknowledged and understood by their fellow queer siblings
these same people will continue to call these things non-issues, or claim that they "have never seen such oppression towards trans men" even when provided with evidence, or straight up just using 4chan terminology to describe the assassination of anyone who has a masculine expression of queerness
i know i am nobody to say this, i know i shouldnt even be involved, but i've been through the exact same issues, people quite literally describing ways they would torture me on public, sending me death threats, subposting me cowardly, and calling all of my issues as "non-issues", quite literally celebrating the idea of me killing myself, even though all i wanted was just to hang out with people and stablish basic boundaries
I don't want people to tell me they want to "forcefem" me, i don't want people to tell me that i'm wrong for existing, i don't want people to tell me that i am "choosing to be the villain" for voicing my complaints, i don't want people to keep invalidating my emotions, and i don't want any of that happening to any of my friends, whatever their gender or sexual orientation or pronouns are.
i'm not elon musk, i'm not a fascist, i'm not your enemy, just please let me fucking be, let me exist, let me love you, because i want to love you all so fucking bad and often i just feel like an alien in this platform.
As a purist, I prefer to generate my own delusions without AI assistance. Smaller carbon footprint and all that.
